Rehearsals are underway for the previously announced Off-Broadway world premiere of Samantha Hurley's I'm Gonna Marry You Tobey Maguire. The new work will play the cell theatre July 8–July 29, with opening night set for July 12.
Dealing with an absent father, a neglectful mother, and mean-spirited classmates, Shelby Hinkley's eighth grade is proving to be a hard time. To cope with it all, Shelby focuses on the best thing about 2004: Spider-Man. When leading an online fan club is no longer enough, she decides to kidnap and marry Tobey Maguire; but will the actor live up to her happily-ever-after fantasies?
Go behind the scenes of the first day of rehearsals for the upcoming production below:
Tessa Albertson (Younger) leads the cast as Shelby, sharing the stage with Janae Robinson (Blue Bloods) as Brenda Dee Cankles and Brian Fiddyment (while you were partying) as Tobey. Casting is by Joseph Hayes.
Tyler Struble is directing, leading a creative team including scenic and costume designer Rodrigo Martinez Hernandez, lighting designer Matt Lazarus, and sound designer Nina Field. Kacey Bradshaw is stage managing. The run is produced by Jacob Stuckelman of Watermark Productions and the cell.
“If Shakespeare or Arthur Miller read this play, their brains would probably ooze out of their ears and honestly, I love that for me, for us,” said Hurley in an earlier statement. “This is a play for my people. This is for the girlies who were writing One Direction fan fiction and for anyone who has ever kissed a glossy TigerBeat or M magazine poster in their room. You may think this play is not for you, but it probably is.”
