The stage musical adaptation of DreamWorks' animated film The Prince of Egypt has joined Music Theatre International's licensing catalogue. International restrictions may apply.

The work features music and lyrics by Grammy and Oscar winner Stephen Schwartz and a book by Philip LaZebnik. Along with five songs from the 1998 film—including the Oscar-winning megahit "When You Believe"—the stage adaptation adds 10 new tunes from the Wicked writer.

Telling the Biblical story of Moses, The Prince of Egypt played a world-premiere run at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley in 2017, followed by stagings at Denmark's Fredericia Teater and Utah's Tuachan Center for the Arts. A London production played the West End in 2020, and was filmed on stage the following year. The musical's stage film can currently be streamed on BroadwayHD, and will become available for digital rental and purchase separate from BroadwayHD beginning December 5.

"It was because of the consistent demand from theatres and producing groups around the world that we first undertook creating a stage version of The Prince of Egypt," says Schwartz in a statement. "I am truly delighted that not only will the show now be available for licensing and production, but that there exists this video record of the beautiful West End production to inform and inspire. I am grateful to all the artists who made this possible and to MTI and DreamWorks Theatricals for giving the show such a promising future.”

The Prince of Egypt joins MTI's catalogue as its latest in a long line of Stephen Schwartz musicals that also includes Captain LouieChildren of EdenDisney's My Son, PinocchioGodspellPippinRagsSnapshotsThe Baker's WifeThe Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Working.
