Off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons has revealed its 2023-2024 season, which will feature the world premiere of Teeth, a new musical from Pulitzer and Tony winner Michael R. Jackson (A Strange Loop, White Girl in Danger) and Anna K. Jacobs (POP!, Harmony). Its run is set for February 2024.
The six-production season at the Off-Broadway venue will kick off with the world premiere of David Adjmi's Stereophonic in October. Featuring original songs by Arcade Fire's Will Butler, the play is set in a music studio in the mid-1970s as a rock band's rise to stardom brings pressures that might spell its downfall.
Following in November will be a repertory presentation of three works performed by their writers. These include the New York premiere of Milo Cramer's School Pictures, the Off-Broadway premiere of Alexandra Tatarsky's Sad Boys in Harpy Land, and the New York premiere of Emmy nominee Ikechukwu Ufomadu's Amusements.
Jackson and Jacobs' Teeth, based on the 2007 horror comedy film of the same name, follows evangelical Christian teenager Dawn O'Keefe, whose body bites back when men try to violate her. Sarah Benson will direct and Raja Feather Kelly will choreograph the work about the battling forces of sexuality and religion, revenge and transformation. Lyrics are by Jackson, music is by Jacobs, and the book was penned by the duo. It is presented by Playwrights Horizons by special arrangement with Mark Gordon Pictures.
Closing out the line-up of productions in April 2024 will be the world premiere of Abe Koogler's Staff Meal under the direction of Morgan Green. A group of solitary city folk are searching for connection and comfort as the world falls apart in Koogler's comedy. Set in a mysterious restaurant, a group of servers is trying to keep the friendly service and tasty food coming—at least until the restaurant is no longer a safe haven at closing time.
Playwrights Horizons Artistic Director Adam Greenfield said in a statement, “As the landscape of non-profit Off-Broadway changes, and our theatre community navigates new economic and audience patterns, we’ve aimed to expand in our 2023-24 season the range of works and experiences Playwrights Horizons offers. This season of premieres is an eclectic range of genres, forms, and price points, actively searching for greater variety and heterogeneity in response to a culture that’s searching for the same. This is what the name ‘Playwrights Horizons’ promises: working with the artists of today to chart a course for tomorrow.”
The Movement Theatre Company and Playwrights Horizons are continuing their partnership with The Movement @ Playwrights residency, which will begin in May 2024 at the Mainstage Theater.
Casting, additional creative team members, and performance dates will be announced at a later time.
