Maxwell Caulfield, Zoë Doano, and Chris Peluso will star in the European premiere of Maury Yeston, Peter Stone, and Thomas Meehan's 2011 Off-Broadway musical Death Takes a Holiday, beginning performances January 16, 2017, prior to an official opening January 23 at London's Charing Cross Theatre, for a run through March 4.
Based on the 1928 Italian play of the same name, which also inspired the movie, it is set in Northern Italy, shortly after World War One, where Death disguises himself as a handsome young prince to try to understand why life is so precious and death so feared. But when he unexpectedly falls in love with a newly engaged young woman, this mysterious stranger discovers that love may in fact be stronger than death.
Caulfield, who has previously been seen in the West End and on Broadway as Billy Flynn in Chicago, has most recently toured the U.K. in Guys & Dolls. His screen appearances include TV's Dynasty and The Colbys and the film Grease 2.
Doano recently played Cosette in Les Miserables in the West End. Prior to this, she played Johanna in the New York-bound Sweeney Todd set in a recreation of a real London pie shop.
Peluso was most recently seen in the West End as Gaylord Ravenal in Show Boat at the New London Theatre, and prior to that took over the role of Chris in the Broadway-bound revival of Miss Saigon. His Broadway credits include Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Mamma Mia!, Lestat, and Assassins. He has also played Fiyero in the U.S. national tour of Wicked. He will appear in the production through February 11 only.
Also in the company are Kathryn Akin, Anthony Cable, Trudi Camilleri, Ken Christiansen, Scarlett Courtney, Sophie-May Feek, James Gant, Matthew McDonald, Gay Soper, Ashley Stillburn, Samuel Thomas, and Helen Turner.
The production is directed by Thom Southerland, with choreography by Sam Spencer-Lane and musical direction by Dean Austin. Sets are by Morgan Large, with costumes by Jonathan Lipman, lighting by Matt Daw, and sound by Andrew Johnson. It is produced by Danielle Tarento, Steven M. Levy, Sean Sweeney, and Vaughan Williams.
