La Jolla Playhouse's world premiere of Tony winner Joe DiPietro's Babbitt, adapted from the novel by Sinclair Lewis, begins previews November 7.

Directed by Tony winner Christopher Ashley (Come From Away) and choreographed by Stephen Buescher, performances are scheduled through December 3 in the Mandell Weiss Theatre. Opening night is November 12.

The cast features Tony winner Matthew Broderick (The Producers) as George Babbitt with Genevieve Angelson (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike) as Tanis Judique/Zilla Riesling/Eunice Littlefield/Storyteller 5, Emmy nominee Anna Chlumsky (Veep) as Seneca Doane/Tinka Babbitt/Lucille McKelvey/Storyteller 4, Julie Halston (Sex and the City) as Mrs. Frink/Mrs. Bumbleworth/Opal Mudge/Miss McGoun/Storyteller 6, Ann Harada (Avenue Q) as Myra Babbitt/Storyteller 1, Francis Jue (Wild Goose Dreams) as Paul Riesling/Doc Littlefield/Storyteller 2, Matt McGrath (His Girl Friday) as Charles McKelvey/Storyteller 3, and Obie winner Chris Myers (An Octoroon) as Ted Babbitt/Stanley Graf/Fabio/Storyteller 7. Understudies Jalen Davidson, Iris Feng, Victor Flores, Kya Lee, and Linda Libby round out the company.

Babbitt follows George F. Babbitt, a middle-aged real estate broker who is plagued by the thought that he has amounted to nothing. Searching for more to life, he leaps into the most spectacular rebellion of his life―one that could end up costing him everything.

“The idea of adapting Sinclair Lewis’ scintillating novel has been percolating with Joe DiPietro, Matthew Broderick, and myself for several years, and I’m delighted we’re mounting the world premiere at the Playhouse this season,” said Playhouse Artistic Director Ashley in a recent statement. “Lewis’ shrewd political and social satire is still deeply relevant in America 101 years later, and I can’t think of a more glorious cast and creative team to bring the production to life on the Weiss stage.”

The production also has scenic design by Walt Spangler, costume design by Linda Cho, lighting design by Cha See, sound design by Leon Rothenberg, hair and wig design by Charles G. LaPointe, music by composers Mark Bennett and Wayne Barker, dramaturgy by Gabriel Greene, and casting by tbd casting co., Stephanie Yankwitt, and Jacole Kitchen. The stage manager is Martha Donaldson, and the assistant stage manager is Kelly A. Martindale.
