The New Group will present a one-night-only benefit reading of Larry Kramer’s The Destiny of Me June 25, commemorating the playwright’s 83rd birthday and New York City Pride. Trip Cullman will direct the presentation at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, which will feature an introduction by Angels in America playwright Tony Kushner.
Leading the cast of Kramer’s companion play to his The Normal Heart will be Mark Ruffalo as Ned Weeks. Ruffalo previously took on the role in the HBO adaptation of The Normal Heart, directed by Ryan Murphy (whose support The New Group acknowledges in their announcement).
The company will also include Lee Pace as Benjamin, Ellen Barkin as Rena, Eric Bogosian as Richard, Gideon Glick as Alexander, and Josh Hamilton as Dr. Thomas Hamilton. Edie Falco will read stage directions. Pace and Barkin both appeared in the 2011 revival of The Normal Heart.
In the play, Ned reexamines his life as a young gay man while undergoing experimental treatment for AIDS. The play premiered Off-Broadway in 1992 at the Lucille Lortel and was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Tickets, beginning at $50, are available at TheNewGroup.org.
