Looking, the canceled HBO series about a group of young gay men living in San Francisco, will get a wrap-up in the form of an HBO movie, set to premiere July 23, according to Variety.
Like the series, Looking: The Movie will co-star Tony Award nominee Jonathan Groff.
Michael Lannan created the half-hour series, which starred Groff (Spring Awakening, Hamilton), Frankie J. Alvarez and Murray Bartlett as three gay men living in San Francisco. All will also be featured in the film.
Looking premiered January 19, 2014, on the cable network, and ran for 18 episodes over two years.
Groff, recently nominated for his second Tony Award for playing King George III in Hamilton, spoke about the series in a 2014 interview with Playbill.com. Looking, he said, “takes place in modern day [and concerns] a bunch of gay guys … It's sort of a slice-of-life kind of TV show that hopefully will be breaking some ground potentially in that there hasn't been a show like this on TV in a long while, about gay men just living their lives in today's world. I think the goal of the show and the purpose of this show is to illustrate the complexities and realities of the modern-day gay experience, which is a lot of things.”
According to Variety, the upcoming movie, which will debut at 10 PM July 23 on the premium cable network, will see Groff's character “return to San Francisco for the first time in almost a year to celebrate a momentous event with his old friends. In the process, he must face the unresolved relationships he left behind and make difficult choices about what’s important to him.”
Looking: The Movie will have a script by Andrew Haigh and Michael Lannan, be directed by Haigh and be executive-produced by Haigh, Lannan and Sarah Condon.
