Following runs at Edinburgh Festival Fringe and in London's West End, The Shark is Broken has set a Broadway bow at the John Golden Theatre with performances beginning July 25 ahead of an August 10 opening night. Guy Masterson directs.
The Olivier-nominated play, penned by Ian Shaw and Joseph Nixon, is a fictionalized take on behind-the-scenes drama on the 1975 film Jaws. Shaw will make his Broadway debut starring in the work, reprising his Edinburgh and West End performance as his father Robert Shaw, who starred as Quint in the original film. Additional casting for the roles of Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss will be announced later.
As in the earlier runs, The Shark is Broken will feature scenic and costume design by Duncan Henderson, lighting design by Jon Clark, sound design and original music by Adam Cork, and video design by Nina Dunn. Casting is by Jim Carnahan Casting.
The work is, believe it or not, one of two theatrical works tracking the creation of Jaws. A separate musical, titled Bruce, made its world premiere at Seattle Rep in 2022. The Shark is Broken comes to Broadway following a 2022 North American premiere at Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre. That Canadian run featured the full three-person original West End cast, including Shaw, Liam Murray Scott, and Demetri Goritsas. The London bow was nominated for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play at the 2022 Olivier Awards.
The Broadway debut will be produced by Sonia Friedman Productions and Scott Landis.
