The 2022 Into the Woods cast recording has won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater album. The other nominees in the category was SIX: The Musical, A Strange Loop, MJ The Musical, Mr. Saturday Night, and Caroline, or Change. The win was announced at the Grammy Awards ceremony February 5, at Los Angeles' Crypto.com Arena.
Chief Theatricals Executive at Concord Theatricals and album producer Sean Patrick Flahaven accepted the Grammy award onstage: "All of our work is in service to the brilliant authors of Into the Woods, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. We lost Steve a little over a year ago, this album is a tribute to his memory. May it be a blessing. Go see Into the Woods on tour this month!"
The Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine revival started as a New York City Center staged concert as part of their Encores! series, but transferred to Broadway shortly after on June 28, 2022. After several extensions, the revival played its final performance at the St. James Theatre on January 8, 2023. The Into the Woods tour is set to launch on February 18 in Buffalo, New York, with several Broadway stars leading the production.
Other theatre-affiliated award wins of the night include: Terence Blanchard's contemporary opera Fire Shut Up In My Bones (which was presented at the Metropolitan Opera) for Best Opera Recording, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Encanto for Best Compilation Soundtrack and Best Score Soundtrack, "We Don't Talk About Bruno" from Encanto for Best Song for Visual Media, and Voice Of Nature—The Anthropocene featuring soloist Renée Fleming and pianist Yannick Nézet-Séguin for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album.
MJ the Musical star Myles Frost stepped on the stage a handful of times as a presenter this evening, and even accepted Beyoncé's award for Best Dance/Electronic Recording on her behalf, as she was not yet present to receive the prize.
In one of the most celebrated events of the night, stage and screen star Viola Davis achieved EGOT status with her Grammy win for Best Audiobook, Narration, and Storytelling Recording. Davis was recognized for the audiobook of her memoir Finding Me. Upon receiving the prize, she declared to the crowd, "I just EGOT!"
