Los Angeles' Ovation Awards, the annual peer-voted honors given out to both intimate and large stages throughout the L.A. area, takes on the theme "L.A.'s Back on Broadway" at the Nov. 24 gala awards ceremony at the recently-restored Orpheum Theatre.
The Theatre L.A. Ovation theme is a nod to the recent L.A.-to-NYC transfers of Into the Woods and Flower Drum Song, which are among 2002 Ovation nominees.
Film and theatre veteran Alfred Molina will host the awards. Molina is currently featured on the big screen as world-renowned muralist Diego Rivera in Julie Taymor's "Frida." An L.A. theatre vet with recent turns in Richard III and The Cherry Orchard, he appeared in the original Broadway cast of Art as the harried Yvan, netting a 1998 Tony Award nomination for Best Actor. His television credits include "Ladies Man" and the recently cancelled "Bram and Alice."
Tickets for the 5 PM (PT) ceremony are priced at $35, $75 and $150, and are available through Ticketmaster or on line at http://www.theatrela.org.
* The Deaf West Theatre's Big River, currently in revival at the Mark Taper, scored the most Ovation nominations with 11 nods. Four shows tied for the next highest with eight each — Flower Drum Song, whose stars Lea Salonga, Jodi Long and Sandra Allen were nominated, Into the Woods with Laura Benanti, Christopher Sieber and Gregg Edelman honored, Colony Theatre's Side Show and Road Theatre's Napoli Milionaria.
Flower Drum Song and Into the Woods are both currently running on Broadway. Benanti and Edelman were both nominated for Tony Awards. Colony Theatre's Side Show is also following a Tony precedent — their Siamese twins, Julie Dixon Jackson and Misty Cotton, are being nominated as one performance for Leading Actress in a Musical.

Recipients of the Career Achievement awards are stage, film and TV couple Carole Cook (Broadway's original 42nd Street, Romantic Comedy) and Tom Troupe. The Los Angeles Country Board of Supervisors will receive the James A. Doolittle Award for Leadership in Theater.
First established by the Theatre League Alliance of Southern California in 1989, the Ovation Awards are given in 29 categories — separated in all cases except acting, directing, choreography and writing — into large and intimate theatre divisions.
The Theatre L.A. Ovation voting season runs from Sept. 1 of the previous year to Aug. 31 of current year. Productions must be registered with Actors' Equity Association and run for at least 12 performances. The voters consist of Theatre L.A. member companies and 65 independent theatre professionals.
For more information on the Ovation Awards, check the Theatre League website at http://www.theatrela.org.
