The Olivier-winning play originally premiered in London in 2020 at the Wyndham Theatre, reuniting Stoppard, Marber, and producer Sonia Friedman for the first time since collaborating on Travesties in 2017. Stoppard has previously had 18 plays staged on Broadway, beginning with his famous reimagining Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, which opened 55 years ago. With Leopoldstadt winning the 2023 Tony for Best Play, Stoppard became the most-winning playwright in Tony Award history.

There are rumors according to Deadline that Steven Spielberg and his production company Amblin are shopping a TV adaptation of the play by Patrick Marber, to be directed by Stephen Daldry. Daldry is also a Tony-winning director, having been recognized for his work on The Inheritance, the most recent of his six Broadway credits.

Leopoldstadt is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Roy Furman, and Lorne Michaels.
