The National Theatre of Scotland has announced the lineup for its 2024 season, which includes four world premieres, the return of two acclaimed productions, and more.

New productions include David Ireland's The Fifth Step, directed by Finn den Hertog and starring Jack Lowden; June Carter Cash: The Woman, Her Music and Me, written by and starring Charlene Boyd, and directed by Cora Bissett; and Thank U, Next, a new dance theatre piece created by 21Common and teenagers across Scotland. Lucy Gaizely and Gary Gardiner will direct the latter. 

The season will also feature the return of two previous National Theatre Productions, including Enough of Him, May Sumbwanyambe's play based on the true story of Joseph Knight. Orla O'Loughlin will direct, and Omar Austin will star as Knight. Dear Billy, a celebration of Billy Connolly written and performed by Gary McNair, will also return to the Scottish Stage with Joe Douglas at the helm. 

Additional productions in the 2024 season include Damian Barr and James Ley's Maggie & Me, Marc Brew and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's An Accident/A Life, Zoë Bullock's Shō and the Demons of the Deep, Beldina Odenyo's Tero Buru, Hannah Lavery's Protest. 

The theatre will also present digital works, including Gillian Katungi's short film Metamorphosis: Feeling My Way (to Freedom), and Hope Dickson Leach and Vlad Butucea's new film adaptation of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

“We are delighted to be offering audiences a packed theatrical program in 2024 with thrilling new productions alongside acclaimed shows that we have brought back by popular demand," Artistic Director Jackie Wylie said in a statement. "National Theatre of Scotland has always held a lens up through which we can view ourselves, as a nation, as a society and never more so than in this programme. Through the sharing of important stories, that tell us about ourselves, we explore our shared humanity."
