News Destiny's Child Star Set for Muny Aida Michelle Williams will star in the title role at the St. Louis venue.
Grammy winner Michelle Williams, of Destiny’s Child fame, will star in the title role of The Muny’s summer production of Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida, which will be presented at the St. Louis venue August 8–14. She played the role previously during the original Broadway run.

Matt Lenz will direct the limited run with choreography by Jon Rua and music direction by Andrew Graham.

“We’re thrilled Michelle will star as our Aida,” said Muny artistic director and executive producer Mike Isaacson in a statement. “It is one of the most iconic roles in contemporary musical theatre, and I can’t wait to see her create her particular brand of musical magic on the Muny stage."

Michelle Williams joined the record-setting R&B/pop female group Destiny’s Child in 1999. A string of hit singles such as “Say My Name,” “Independent Women Part 1,” “Survivor” and “Bootylicious” spurred worldwide album sales of 50 million and numerous awards. In 2002 Williams embarked on a solo career starting with the release of her debut album, Heart to Yours, followed by Do You Know (2004), Unexpected (2008) and Journey to Freedom (2014). Williams made her theatrical stage debut in 2003 in the title role of the hit Broadway musical Aida. Williams has since appeared in productions of The Color Purple, Chicago and Fela!

The seven shows in the 2016 Muny season are The Wizard of Oz (June 13 – 22), 42nd Street (June 24 – 30), The Music Man (July 5 – 11), Young Frankenstein (July 13 – 19), Mamma Mia! (July 21 – 28), Fiddler on the Roof (July 30 – August 5) and Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida (August 8 –14).
