Los Angeles' Center Theatre Group has revealed its 2024-2025 season, which will include the reopening of the Mark Taper Forum. The company's programming in the venue has been canceled since July 2023 due to budgetary shortfalls.

But that will change October 2 as performances start with a new revival of Green Day's American Idiot, produced in collaboration with Deaf West Theatre (Spring Awakening, Big River). Artistic Director Snehal Desai will direct an ensemble of Deaf and hearing actors performing simultaneously in American Sign Language and English. The musical, inspired by Green Day's 2004 album, features music by the band, lyrics by Billie Joe Armstrong, and a book by Armstrong and Michael Mayer. CTG's new staging comes as the album—which includes such tracks as "Wake Me Up When September Ends," "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "21 Guns," and the title song—celebrates its 20th anniversary.

CTG's production is being licensed by Music Theatre International. Performances will run through November 10.

Next up will be a world premiere from Thanksgiving Play playwright Larissa FastHorse, a co-production with Arena Stage. Running January 29-March 9, 2025, at the Taper, Fake It Until You Make It is a satirical look at what defines identity in today's world. Michael John Garcés will direct.

As previously announced, Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends will play the Ahmanson via CTG February 8-March 9, 2025, before coming to Broadway. Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga will both lead the West Coast run before the Broadway bow, with Matthew Bourne and Julia McKenzie co-directing. The revue, featuring songs from the late musical theatre legend, began as a one-night-only concert in London's West End in 2022 that later returned for a limited run. CTG's run of the Cameron Mackintosh-devised concert will be its North American premiere.

Closing out the Taper offerings will be a new production of Shakespeare's Hamlet, directed by Robert O'Hara (Slave Play). O'Hara states in press notes that he will dive into the work of Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, Salvador Dali, and Perry Mason for his new take on the tragedy. "I like my Shakespeare tragedies lean, brisk, and intense. There will be blood," O'Hara says. Performances will run May 28-July 6, 2025.

Also in the group's upcoming season: Life of Pi, playing the Ahmanson May 7-June 1, 2025, after its Broadway run last season; and the Tony-winning Broadway revival of Parade, directed again by Michael Arden. The latter will run June 17-July 12, 2025.
