The Chicago premiere of Rajiv Joseph's Describe the Night begins its run at Steppenwolf Theatre Company March 2, with the run set to continue through April 9. The work centers on Jewish writer Isaac Babel whose 1920 journal is found 90 years later in the wreckage of a suspicious plane crash.

Featured in the cast are Jack Cain, Glenn Davis, Caroline Neff, Sally Murphy, James Vincent Meredith, Jon Hudson Odom, Yasen Peyankov, and Karen Rodriguez.

Tony nominee Austin Pendleton is at the helm, leading a creative team that includes scenic designer Collette Pollard, costume designer Raquel Adorno, lighting designer Keith Parham, and sound designer Pornchanok Kanchanabanca. Gigi Buffington is company voice and text coach, and the production is cast by JC Clementz. Christine D. Freeburg is production stage manager.

Describe the Night was commissioned by Houston's Alley Theatre, where it had its world premiere in 2017 before making its New York debut Off-Broadway via Atlantic Theater Company the same year. The Off-Broadway production won Joseph the 2018 Obie Award for Best New American Play.
