Ken Ludwig’s comedy Lend Me a Tenor celebrates its 30th anniversary. The production, directed by Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, opened at the Royale Theatre March 2, 1989, after beginning previews on February 17. Starring Tony Award nominee Victor Garber, Lend Me a Tenor follows the hijinks and mistaken identities that occur when, through a series a mishaps, world-famous tenor Tito Morelli receives a double dose of tranquilizers, causing the house manager to believe he is dead on the evening of his historic night at the Cleveland Opera Company.
The production also starred Philip Bosco, Jane Connell, Tovah Feldshuh, Ron Holgate, Jeff Brooks, David Cryer, Caroline Lagerfelt, and J. Smith-Cameron. Lend Me A Tenor would go on to be nominated for seven Tony Awards, earning two wins for Best Direction and Best Actor in a Play for Bosco’s performance.
