Second Stage Theater announced via Instagram that the January 4 performance of Appropriate on Broadway has been cancelled "due to a COVID-related illness." Ticket holders for the 7 PM performance have been directed to contact their point of purchase for next steps.
The work by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins opened December 18 at the Hayes Theater after beginning performances November 29. The production marks Jacobs-Jenkins' Broadway playwriting debut, following a credit in 2022 for contributing additional material to Lincoln Center Theater's revival of Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth. Lila Neugebauer is directing. Read the reviews here.
The production stars Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award winner Sarah Paulson as Toni, Corey Stoll (House of Cards, Billions) as Bo, Natalie Gold (Succession) as Rachael, Elle Fanning (The Great) as River, and Alyssa Emily Marvin (Grey House) as Cassidy, alongside Graham Campbell as Rhys and Michael Esper (The Last Ship) as Franz. Lincoln Cohen and Everett Sobers share the role of Ainsley. Rounding out the company as understudies are Maxim Chlumecky, Michael Crane, Mia Sinclair Jenness, and Danielle Skraastad.
The work centers on a white family who, while closing out the estate of their late father, discover some disturbing artifacts that force them to confront their family's past. The play was previously produced in 2014 Off-Broadway at Signature Theatre.
