Face masks will become optional for audience members attending Broadway shows beginning July 1, according to The Broadway League. The move, which is only set for the month of July, leaves open the possibility that this guidance could change afterward; the announcement follows the lifting of vaccine requirements for Broadway audiences earlier this year.
“Millions of people enjoyed the unique magic of Broadway by watching the 75th Tony Award ceremony recently. Millions more have experienced Broadway LIVE in theatres in New York City and throughout the U.S. since we reopened last fall. We’re thrilled to welcome even more of our passionate fans back to Broadway in the exciting 22-23 season that has just begun," says League President Charlotte St. Martin in a statement.
Mask guidelines for August and beyond will be announced mid-July, with the possibility for future month-by-month updates as the continuing struggles with COVID-19 are monitored. The announcement does not affect non-Broadway theatres, leaving Off-Broadway companies and other theatres to set their own policies. Theatregoers should consult the official show website or point of purchase for up-to-date information about COVID protocols for the show (or shows) they will be attending.
The Broadway League is the national trade association for the Broadway industry. The League’s 700-plus members include theatre owners and operators, producers, presenters, and general managers in nearly 200 markets in North America and internationally.
