Grosses Broadway Grosses Analysis: Sweeney Todd, & Juliet, and Parade Lead the Season's New Productions at the Box Office

A varied group of musicals are establishing themselves as Broadway's newest box-office draws.

Box-office numbers are in for the 31 currently running Broadway shows last week, with long-running stalwarts unsurprisingly leading the pack. But newcomers Sweeney Todd with $1.73 million, & Juliet with $1.18 million, and Parade with $1.16 million seem to be pulling out from the pack to establish themselves the best performers of the season's new shows. It's also worth nothing that Sweeney is achieving those numbers with a reduced seven-performance schedule. With heavy hitters like Lincoln Center Theater's Camelot revival and New York, New York pulling in respectable totals even while still in previews, this group could well expand or change in the coming weeks.

The Phantom of the Opera continued its precipitous build-up to its April 16 final performance, breaking its own record (from the week prior) yet again with $3.25 million at the box office. The long-running Andrew Lloyd Webber musical will have to make the most of its final two weeks on Broadway to best the record of recent top grosser The Music Man, which brought in a staggering $3.97 million the week of New Year's 2023. With fans clamoring to see the chandelier crash down one last time at the Majestic as Phantom's historic 35-year run draws to a close, the musical may just beat even Hugh Jackman before all is said and done.

On the whole, Broadway enjoyed a healthy week with a cumulative take of $34.4 million and nearly 92% of seats filled—270,934 theatregoers caught a Broadway show last week. With the Tonys eligibility cut off (April 27) drawing ever closer, Broadway is currently hosting no less than six productions still in previews. As shows open and reduce the amount of comped tickets, we could see overall grosses rise precipitously in the coming weeks.
