Even with a reduced cumulative box office total compared to the week prior, last week was a pretty healthy one for Broadway. Total grosses were down by just a smidge over 1% even though there were two fewer shows to see. Capacity was at a strong 90.78% across all 28 currently running shows, with 248,525 people seeing a Broadway show at an average ticket price of $125.50.
But who were the winners? Broadway said goodbye to both Grey House and New York, New York July 30. Neither cracked the top 10 in the final week, but both saw notable upticks in ticket sales as theatregoers rushed to catch both shows while they still could. Grey House brought in the highest gross of its entire run, beating its second highest-performing week by more than $200,000. New York, New York didn't quite meet its own high mark from last May, but still brought in a healthy total just short of earning the Kander-Ebb-Miranda musical a spot in The $1 Million Club.
Elsewhere it's largely business as usual, with The Lion King, Wicked, Hamilton, Sweeney Todd, and Funny Girl taking the top five spots. An extra ninth performance for both The Lion King and Wicked helped both break into The $2 Million Club last week. Of the 2022-2023 season's new shows, Sweeney remains the big winner while Parade and & Juliet continue to perform as well. Good Night, Oscar seems to still be riding on a Tony Awards high, beating its own record for the highest-grossing week of its run for the third week in a row.
Looking towards the 2023-2024 season, newcomer Here Lies Love saw its top-grossing week so far at $913,782, while Back to the Future continues to be a reliable top grosser with $1,135,892. We should expect that number to increase, possibly dramatically, after opening night (the screen-to-stage musical officially opens August 3) when the production isn't comping as many of its seats to press.
