Broadway box office continued its slow-but-steady incline last week with a 2.33% increase across the 35 currently running shows, which brought in a cumulative $36.9 million in the final week of grosses data before Tony Awards were handed out June 16.
And because we already know who the big Tony winners were this year, it's a little interesting to see Cabaret, which lost out on Best Revival of a Musical to Merrily We Roll Along, handily beating the Sondheim revival at the box office. Similarly, Best Musical winner The Outsiders ranked the 15th-highest-grossing show of the week, which means we may really get to see the impact of winning that title after we start to get post-Tony grosses data.
Leading the increase in overall grosses last week was An Enemy of the People, which broke box-office records at the Circle in the Square Theatre in its penultimate week on the boards. The revival's star, Jeremy Strong, won a Tony Award over the weekend, which could make the show's last week on Broadway soar to even greater heights. Ben Platt also saw increased attendance in the final week of his residency at the Palace. While not breaking into The $1 Million Club, the percentage of seats filled rose by almost 13% compared to the week prior. His final performances played to 94.18%-full houses at the newly reopened Palace Theatre.
Overall, it feels like summer is truly here, with both The Lion King and Wicked in The $2 Million Club last week—it's been a minute since we've had more than one. The rest of the top five highest grossers included Hamilton, Cabaret, and Merrily We Roll Along.
