Video Ben Platt Reveals the Inspiration Behind Upcoming Album Honeymind, Talks Upcoming Broadway Concert Residency

Platt appeared on the view March 18 to share the news and perform "Andrew" from the album.

Broadway star and music artist Ben Platt stopped by The View March 18 to discuss his upcoming album Honeymind, plus, the big Broadway news he revealed just yesterday. See the full interview in the video above.

Platt discussed how he sought to write the album he wished he could have heard growing up, drawing inspiration from Americana artists like Paul Simon, James Taylor, and Carole King: "As a queer person, I listen to that music and of course I relate to it and love it because it's so beautiful and universal, but I always wish there was something in that stylistic canon that was speaking expressively to the queer experience."

He also cites his fiancé, fellow Dear Evan Hansen alum Noah Galvin, as the muse for the album, which releases May 31. "He and I were hiking this one day and we were thinking about how happy we make each other...I was trying to articulate the feeling of what it feels like to be in love and be with him, and I'm a very anxious person, as many of us are...I find that when I think about what my mind looks like, it's like all of these things jutting out that are kind of at war with each other and have sharp edges, and I think that something about love just coats all of that. It doesn't make it go away and it doesn't disappear, it's just covered in something a little softer and sweeter and warmer."

Platt also discussed his wedding plans with Galvin, emphasizing that "keeping everyone dancing" is a priority—with as few pauses for speeches as possible. "We're a really lucky, very priveleged pair of guys because we've had wonderful careers and we've had lives where we get to go to parties that are about us or that we get to be in the center of, and I think we're much less concerned with being at the center of attention, and more concerned with throwing an amazing dance party," says Platt.

Platt was also sure to discuss his big Broadway news, which was revealed yesterday. The Tony winner will return to the Broadway stage in the newly renovated Palace Theatre for a limited engagement concert residency in just two months. For 18 performances only, Platt will perform songs from Honeymind, plus selections from his previous albums Reverie and Sing to Me Instead...and potentially a few other surprises. "My foremothers Liza and Judy before me christened this space! It used to be the center of vaudeville and it's such a storied house...I get to play my own music on a Broadway stage, which is my wildest, wildest dream."

See Platt perform "Andrew" from Honeymind in the video below.
