At the ceremony, DeBose won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, following her back-to-back Golden Globe and the SAG Award wins. DeBose, currently an Academy Award nominee for her now HCA Award–winning role, was last seen on the Broadway stage playing Disco Donna in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, as well as Jane in A Bronx Tale the Musical and an ensemble member in Hamilton.
The Netflix adaptation of Jonathan Larson's tick, tick...BOOM! won three awards, including Best Actor for Garfield, who played the late playwright. Going against Cyrano, West Side Story, In The Heights, and Free Guy, the musical won Best Comedy or Musical. Miranda, who made his directorial debut with the movie, also took home Best First Feature.
In the Heights film actor Stephanie Beatriz won Best Animated or VSX Performance for her work in the Disney animated musical Encanto, which features original songs by Miranda. Beatriz won over nominees from The Suicide Squad, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Luca, and her Encanto costar John Leguizamo.
