Andrew Lippa and Tom Greenwald's musical John & Jen celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2025. To celebrate, a new concert staging is coming to Green Room 42, with a focus on the relational realities of assimilation.
Directed by Erin Ortman (1000 Nights and One Day, Real), with music direction by Tony nominee Alexander Gemignani (Here We Are, West Side Story), the concert will star Ari Afsar (Hamilton, Netflix’s Wedding Season) and Nikhil Saboo (Mean Girls, Dear Evan Hansen).
Exploring the complex relationships between brothers and sisters and parents and children, John & Jen is set against the background of a changing America between 1950 and 1990. The musical tells the story of Jen, and her relationships to the two Johns of her life: her younger brother and his namesake, her son, who is trying to find his way in a confusing world.
This version of John & Jen brings into focus the soul-level connection and unavoidable tensions between siblings who have opposing political ideologies, and a mother-son relationship trying to survive the challenges of combating intergenerational trauma. Highlighting a desire for assimilation by many South Asian individuals and the rejection of assimilation held by just as many, this production approaches the Lippa and Greenwald musical through the lens of our increasingly divided world.
Tickets start at $21 and can be purchased here.
