Three Othello vets,André Holland, Chukwudi Iwuji, and John Douglas Thompson, will come together March 7 at 92Y's Kaufmann Concert Hall to read critical passages from the Shakespearean classic and discuss their experience playing the title role. The in-person event takes place at 7:30 PM ET and will also be streamed online.
Shakespeare scholars James Shapiro and Ayanna Thompson will be the evening's moderators, and the event will open with a musical performance from Duke Ellington’s tribute to Shakespeare, Such Sweet Thunder.
Holland played the title role in Othello in 2018 at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, alongside Tony winner Mark Rylance (Farinelli and the King). Olivier winner Iwuji played the role, in the same year, at the Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park. In 2009, Thompson stepped into the role in an Off-Broadway production of the famous tragedy at the Theatre for a New Audience.
The conversation is part of Columbia University’s Such Sweet Thunder: Ellington Plays Shakespeare—Love and Power in Adaptation series. More information can be found at 92Y.com.
