The evening features Broadway stars sharing their "big break" moments in story and song, as well as an award presentation to Whitman, who receives the Transporting American Theatre Award from playwright Moises Kaufman (The Laramie Project) for her contributions to the American theatre.

Hosted by Julie Halston (You Can’t Take It With You), the evening features performances from Alice Ripley (Next to Normal), Lindsay Mendez (Dogfight), Michael Cerveris (Fun Home), Lisa Kron (Fun Home) and Heather MacRae (I Remember Mama).

Whitman's producing credits include A Raisin in the Sun, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, If/Then, Of Mice and Men, Red, Hands on a Hardbody, Next to Normal, Hamlet, 33 Variations, Mary Stuart, Legally Blonde, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. In the West End, she produced Piaf, starring Elena Roger. National tours include Next to Normal, Legally Blonde, …Spelling Bee, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Frost/Nixon.

Whitman is a board member of the Tectonic Theater Project, a member of the Leadership Council of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, East Coast Chair of Northwestern University's School of Communications Advisory Council and Chair Emeritus of Play Group Theatre, a Westchester-based theatre for children and teens. She is a member of the Broadway League as well as Actors' Equity Association and SAG-AFTRA.

Past recipients of the Transporting American Theatre Award include Beth Williams, Sue Frost, Christian Borle, Paul Huntley, Douglas Carter Beane, Lewis Flinn, A.R. Gurney, Liz Smith, Barbara Freitag, Terrence McNally and Joe Mantello.
