Film star Josh Lucas made his Broadway debut this season alongside Oscar nominee Uma Thurman in her Broadway debut as two halves of a D.C. power couple living in Trump’s American in The Parisian Woman.
“It really isn’t [as much] about politics as it is about relationships and about love and about marriage and about sex and about what an open marriage may be and people who play in different corridors of power and sexuality and manipulation,” Lucas told Kelly Rippa and Ryan Seacrest on LIVE with Kelly and Ryan December 26.
Lucas calls the play a 90-minute rocket ship of comedy, but notices that different audiences react in different ways: “We have audiences who are wildly applauding to the liberal comedy and audiences who seem quite happy with the conservative element of the play, too.
“My goal with this play is to have Republicans and conservatives come watch this play and love it as much as liberals,” he says in the video above.
Adding to the layers of the show, writer Beau Willimon (House of Cards) has been tweaking the play as it goes to keep it as fresh as possible.
“The play has an absolute in-the-moment element to the point where when we opened, the night we had 50 reviewers there and the New York Times and everybody there, we had changed four or five lines that we had never rehearsed. I’m literally out onstage riding the dialogue, which I know very well, thinking, ‘OK these are the five lines I’m rehearsing in my head as I go.’”
