Video game and theatre nerds, your interests are about to unite. A new musical theatre-inspired video game, based on the stage and screen musical The Rocky Horror Show, is headed to Nintendo Switch, PS5, XBox, and Steam in October from FreakZone Games. Watch a trailer for the upcoming game above.
The title will take the cult musical and turn it into an eight-bit-style side-scroller, with a score that reimagines Richard O'Brien's songs as retro video game music.
Inspired by science fiction and horror B-movies of the '30s, '40s, '50s, and '60s, The Rocky Horror Show (retitled The Rocky Horror Picture Show for its film version) follows young innocents Brad and Janet as they find themselves stranded at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, arriving just as he's about to unveil his newest creation: an artificially made, physically perfect muscle man with a high libido.
The show began as an Off-West-End musical at London's Royal Court Theatre in 1973, coming to Broadway in 1975 and making the jump to the big screen the same year. The film version, starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Meat Loaf, O'Brien, and Barry Bostwick, has become one of the most successful cult films of all time, thanks to its history of audience participation and regular screenings with live actors performing the work in front of the movie.
