DESCRIPTION

The Technical Supervisor serves as a day-to-day primary point of contact between the theater and the rental companies it serves. The primary focus of the Technical Supervisor is to ensure productions / their crew have the facility resources they need to aid each production, promote respectful use of the theater by the same, and support upkeep efforts across the venue. Technical Supervisors are managed by the Technical Director and will frequently work alone or in conjunction with the Front of House Staff on performance days.

Responsibilities:

  • Open and close the building at scheduled times to support renter’s needs. This will include both rehearsals and performances.
  • Serve as an ancillary resource to production groups. This may occasionally include providing supplemental assistance with load in, support for equipment setup, assistance with focus, or other similar efforts.
  • Provide high-level technical support for the Theater’s equipment, including familiarizing renters with the theater’s systems, troubleshooting in the event of an equipment malfunction, and supporting the smooth operation of the same. This may occasionally require setting up a few microphones and / or getting basic lighting onstage.
  • Setup and breakdown of theater-owned event-specific equipment, as required. This may include setting up the theater’s projection system, setup of tables and chairs, or staging of equipment for renter’s use.
  • Complete basic maintenance tasks and follow up on repair requests, as necessary and in a timely manner. These types of requests may be planned and scheduled in advance by the Technical Director or may be unplanned and require action during a rehearsal or performance. Tasks may include, but are not necessarily limited to: changing lamps, sweeping / mopping, clearing a blocked toilet, organizing technical spaces, equipment troubleshooting, and completing equipment repairs.
  • Enforce the Theater’s rules, regulations - including those related to policies, procedures, and safety. This may require on the feet thinking and exercising judgement to balance the needs of productions within the framework of the theater’s policies.
  • Ensure an attractive, sanitary, and safe environment for renters.
  • Work with Front of House and Stage Management team for each event to ensure smooth operations for performances.
  • Safeguards the technical assets of the theater and supervises use of the same to ensure equipment is treated properly.
  • Provide a brief end of shift summary characterizing any abnormalities, issues, requests, and / or concerns in a highly digestible format (bullet points).

Qualifications / Experience / Requisite Skills:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience and success in technical theater with a working knowledge of live theater technologies and the willingness to improve those skills.
  • Must be able to think on your feet and exercise judgement when faced with novel or otherwise unfamiliar situations.
  • A meticulous attention to detail is a must.
  • Strong communicator with the interpersonal skills necessary to regularly interact with renters and, on occasion, members of the public.
  • Must have a mindset that is geared towards providing support that results in a generally positive experience for both renters and the public.
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for theater, performing arts, and arts education a plus.
  • Previous operations management experience is a plus.

Job Type: Per Diem
Schedule: Shifts are scheduled based on production needs and are generally finalized a month in advance, when possible. Individual shift lengths may vary, with a minimum length of 4 hrs. Shift lengths will not exceed 40 hrs per week. Annual total hours will not exceed 29 hrs per week.
