Who We Are Looking For
The Flea is seeking a skilled, motivated, and passionate Technical Director to support the technical and production needs of The Flea’s three performance spaces.
Position Summary
The Technical Director’s main purview is the operation of three physical theaters - The Hub - The Sam, The Pete, and The Siggy Theaters. The Technical Director works closely with the Production Manager, The Hub, to ensure the day-to-day maintenance and operational soundness of the three theaters and their dressing rooms, costume shop, theatrical storage spaces, and equipment therein in order to maintain and deliver our spaces and equipment in good working order to Flea Productions, Resident Companies, and renters. This includes regular upkeep of spaces and equipment as well as maintaining and tracking inventory.
Alongside the Associate General Manager, the Technical Director also comprises a critical part of the Rental Operations team, supporting the operations of a robust year-round rental program.
Responsibilities include the following:
The Hub
- In close collaboration with Production Manager, The Hub, create and execute overview, restore, and maintenance schedules for all spaces; keep spaces and equipment (e.g., lighting, sound, video) in proper order; establish workflows and schedules to restore, replace, manage equipment and spaces.
- Work with Production Manager, The Hub to creatively and proactively produce long-term strategies to prepare for theater usage; manage, troubleshoot and solve technical, equipment, and space issues
- Maintain, supervise, and enforce safety protocols and processes.
- Serve as physical support for space configuration moves, shifting of inventory, lighting, audio, and video installation, and other physical needs.
- In collaboration with Associate General Manager, schedule and manage team of Technical Liaisons to ensure sufficient building coverage and rental support outside of regular office hours.
- Provide ancillary technical support to full production teams of Flea Productions, as needed
- Other duties, as required
Rental Operations
- Serve as close collaborator to Associate General Manager in the running of the Flea’s Rental Program; this includes, but is not limited to, planning, pre-production, and strike meetings, as well as monitoring load-in, tech rehearsals, early performances, strike, and load-out.
- Regularly attend site visits and meetings with renters and provide/review necessary technical information
- Closely review load in, tech, and load out schedules of renters
- Identify communicate, and coordinate solutions to any problems effectively and collaboratively
- Provide oversight and consultative support during rental period.
- Thoroughly check theater to ensure space and equipment is properly restored after each use; communicate discrepancies to Associate General Manager in timely manner
- Other duties, as required
Required Qualifications & Knowledge
Minimum of 3 years of experience working in theatrical production.
Knowledge of various operating systems and software: MacOS; Microsoft Office; Google Suite; VectorWorks and/or AutoCad
Strong working knowledge of theatrical lighting (e.g., electronics, electrical wiring, and control systems), audio and video systems
A deep belief in the mission of The Flea and a desire to work toward its success; strong desire to work within diverse work environments and become a trusted member of a team; and a commitment to an inclusive, accessible, and equitable workplace environment.

Required Skills
Project Management: Ability to understand long-term goals and craft efficient, executable plans for completion; able to delegate tasks effectively and follow-up when necessary; able to communicate with various stakeholders to ensure project completion. ability to break those into short term projects; ability to delegate work effectively.
Physical Requirements: comfort with climbing and working on ladders, scaffolding, and aerial work platform (Genie GR20); ability to lift up to 50 lbs without assistance; experience and comfort with safely using hand and power tools.
Expertise in at least one of these fields: stage carpentry, theatrical lighting, and/or sound & video.
Preferred Qualifications
F1 or F3 FDNY Certificate of Fitness
Dante Certificate Level 1
Familiarity with ETC EOS Lighting Control Consoles
Experience working with mission aligned organizations
This is a full time position with a salary range of $65,000-70,000, and includes health and dental benefits, plus a generous PTO policy. This position will require evenings and weekends as needed.
The Flea is intentionally building an internal culture that celebrates sustainability, teamwork, and invests in people. While this role does require a full-time presence at the theater, The Flea accommodates flexible work schedules for its staff as well as opportunities to take reasonable leaves of absence for outside projects.
