Shakespeare Theatre Company, located in Washington DC, seeks a full-time Resident Design Assistant to join our talented costume team. Under the direction of the Costume Director, the Resident Design Assistant is responsible for helping achieve the Costume Designer’s vision. They collaborate and communicate effectively with costume and wardrobe staff, along with overhire staff, to assign tasks pursuant to the show’s needs. They are responsible for delegating tasks to staff members, ordering costume pieces, and communicating with crafts artisans, wig makers, and wardrobe staff to deliver the design on-schedule. From the beginning stages of the design process through tech, opening, and understudy fittings, this is an essential member of the Costume team. This is a full-time position with excellent benefits and an annual salary of $55,000 - $60,000.

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in Costume Design/Technology OR equivalent professional experience. Preferred experience for this position includes: minimum 3-4 years of professional costume design assistant work with Broadway and Regional Theatre Costume Designers. A more advanced candidate will have a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Costume Design, or 4-6 years professional Costume Design Assistant work w/Broadway and Regional Theatre Costume Designers. This is an onsite position, with evening and weekend hours required during tech and previews. Candidates must have an active driver’s license and feel comfortable driving in DC.
