The Costume Shop consists of a talented team of artisans who support Juilliard’s students in a professional atmosphere as they perform in a multitude of performances and projects across varied genres.

The Draper works with a larger group of Costume Shop Staff, developing patterns and overseeing the full construction of costumes from Designer sketches and research. As part of the Production Department, their work is an integral part of attaining our goal of providing the highest caliber of production experience for the gifted students for whom public performance is a keystone to their training.

This is a full-time, seasonal (42-week), in person position. Work hours are Monday through Friday 9:00- 6:00 pm with occasional night and weekend calls. The salary range for this role $53,500 - $54,500 annually.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Develops the specifics of the construction for each assigned costume through research and discussion with outside Costume Designers and Director of Costumes.
  • Drapes and develops patterns from Designer sketches, calculating the fabric yardage. Prepares mock-up samples for Designers as needed.
  • Manages a team including a First Hand and per diem stitchers as needed. Coordinates workflow and supervises all stages of costume development inclusive of guiding the cutting and stitching process, so as to maintain a consistent high level of quality.
  • Responsible for meeting deadlines, often while working on several productions at the same time.
  • Coordinates fitting requests with the Assistant Costume Design Apprentice and Costume Shop Supervisor, attending and directing fittings as needed.
  • Attends dress rehearsals in the evening and on weekends if necessary.
  • Assists in the completion and alteration of costumes other than those being built as needed.
  • Participates in the training of the Costume Design Assistant Apprentices, including proper sewing technique instruction. Instructs Apprentices on best practices in communication between outside Costume Designers and Costume Shop technical staff.
  • Assists with taking yearly student measurements and maintaining measurement database.
  • Assists with restocking when needed.
  • Attends weekly shop meetings.
  • Fulfills maintenance duties on a daily, weekly, and yearly basis in the costume shop and storage areas.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Two years’ experience in a professional costume shop.
  • Demonstrated ability in a wide range of clothing construction techniques and alteration methods.
  • Experience in costume construction for opera, drama, and dance productions.
  • Proficiency in flat patterning, draping, tailoring techniques and fabric manipulation.
  • Proficiency in the use of industrial and domestic sewing machines as well as sergers, and hand sewing skills.
  • Knowledge of costume history and vocabulary.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and multi-tasking abilities.
  • Ability to work well collaboratively as part of and in a team setting.
  • A commitment to equity, diversity, inclusiveness, and belonging.

Preferred Background:

  • Previous experience in an educational institution.
  • Experience in the training of staff or apprentices.
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
