Off-Broadway News World Premieres from Nathan Alan Davis, Hansol Jung, and Mona Pirnot to Debut at New York Theatre Workshop

The Off-Broadway theatre company has revealed its line-up of works for 2023-2024.

Off-Broadway's New York Theatre Workshop has announced its 2023-24 season, the first by its new Artistic Director Patricia McGregor. The line-up will feature three world premieres and a production of Moisés Kaufman and Amanda Gronich's Here There Are Blueberries.

Kicking off in September, Nathan Alan DavisThe Refuge Plays will make its previously announced world premiere with McGregor directing. The play follows Gail, a young mother decides to leave the traumas of society behind. In the woods of Southern Illinois, a ghost tells her that she has 24 hours to live, sparking a saga exploration of a single Black family's story over 70 years.

It'll be followed by the world premiere of Merry Me by Hansol Jung (Wolf PlayRomeo and Juliet) which will be directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman (Hurricane Diane). The work follows Lieutenant Shane Horne as a blackout leaves the Navy restless. She fills her time with love affairs with all the women on base, but her own merrymaking remains out of reach, and the world seems to be on the brink of destruction.

Mona Pirnot's I love you so much I could die will make its world premiere in the winter of 2024 with Tony nominee Lucas Hnath (Dana H.) at the helm as director. Part concert, part play, the work features monologues performed by a computer and songs performed by the playwright.

Completing the season will be Tectonic Theater Project's Here There Are Blueberries by Tony nominee Moisés Kaufman and Emmy nominee Amanda Gronich. Conceived and directed by Kaufman, the work explores the human realities of Nazism and the Holocaust from an unexpected vantage point. It currently plays at Washington, D.C.'s Harman Hall via Shakespeare Theatre Company.

“When I dreamed of what this job would be, I visioned being able to say yes to audacious and impactful artists like Hansol Jung, Nathan Alan Davis, Mona Pirnot, and Moisés Kaufman’s Tectonic Theater Project,” said McGregor in a statement. “I’m exhilarated by the range of their work that’s simultaneously intimate and epic, rigorous and filled with love. I am humbled to make my first invitations and provocations to our community alongside these singular artists.”

Dates, casting, and full creative teams will be announced in the coming weeks.
