"There's somebody this week I'm talking to about it," Mitchell said last week at a press event for Taye Digg's return to Broadway in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. "But, as with Neil, we're going to wait for the right person and not just plug someone into a schedule. It's very important that the right person is introduced in each country. Neil was the perfect person. We waited for three years for him to be free. If we had gone with someone else, it might not have let as many people [who were] on the fence about it feel that it was safe to come find out about this transsexual rock 'n' roll singer. He was the ambassador."
Neil Patrick Harris opened the show when it began performances March 29, 2014, and won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Since then, Broadway has seen some of the sassiest and sexiest men in the business in the role, including Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, Darren Criss and Mitchell himself.
He compared each Hedwig to a Marvel or DC Comics superhero for fun!
The musical currently stars "Glee" actor Criss through July 19. Taye Diggs will be the next star to put on Hedwig's high heels.
While still in search of the perfect Hedwig for the show's West End debut, Mitchell is working on a film that will shoot in London in the fall, titled "How to Talk to Girls at Parties," starring Nicole Kidman as a punk rocker and Elle Fanning as an alien from outer space.
"It's kind of Romeo and Juliet, but with punks and aliens," he explained.
Hedwig features a book by Mitchell with music and lyrics by Trask.
