The cast of Off-Broadway’s Cruel Intentions: The Musical has been hard at work in the recording studio for the upcoming cast album and just-released music video.
The score for the parody production features hits by Boyz II Men, Christina Aguilera, REM, *NYSYNC, and Britney Spears. In the video above, the cast records “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve in an arrangement by Zach Spound.
Based on the ’90s flick Cruel Intentions (which is itself based on Les Liaisons Dangerous), the musical follows Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil, to charming-yet diabolical step-siblings and their reckless scheme to destroy Annette Hargrove, the innocent daughter of the incoming headmaster.
The production opened at Les Poisson Rouge in November 2017, running through April 8. A national tour will launch in Schenectady in March 2019, coninciding with the album release. The original cast included Lauren Zakrin, Carrie St. Louis Constantine Rousouli, Jessie Shelton, Alex Boniello, Brian Muller, Matthew Griffin, and Patricia Richardson.
