The national tour of David Auburn's Proof, the GableStage mountings of James Joyce's The Dead and A Lesson Before Dying big winners at the 27th Annual Carbonell Awards, held Nov. 18 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
Thoroughly Modern Millie's Marc Kudisch performed two songs from Bells Are Ringing in memory of the late Adolph Green. It was previously incorrectly reported here that Kudisch was host, but the evening was host-free, with introductions and voiceovers by Roger Martin. The Carbonells honor the best in South Florida theatre.
The Dead, which walked away with four awards, including Best Ensemble, Best Musical and Best Director (Joe Adler), was the first musical ever mounted by the current regime at the GableStage of Coral Gables. The national tour of Proof won all four Road Show Awards, scoring for Best Production, Best Director (Tony winner Daniel Sullivan), Best Actor (Robert Foxworth) and Best Actress (Chelsea Altman). The GableStage Lesson garnered awards for Best Production of a Play, Best Director (Adler, picking up his second award of the evening) and Best Actor in a Play (John Archie).
A total of 32 separate plays and musicals from 12 regional companies from Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Palm Beaches received nominations. In all, more than two dozen professional troupes mounted over 100 eligible shows from Miami through Fort Lauderdale to the Palm Beaches for the season that officially ended on Labor Day 2002, according to the announcement.
The Carbonell Awards were founded in 1976 by the South Florida Critics Circle, which relinquished administrative control of the program earlier this year. Transition to a new community-based board of trustees, and an awards council comprised of theatre and arts executives is currently under way. Some critics continue to form a minority of the regional voting panel, and continue as the sole voters for non-resident touring shows, selected separately in a single ballot to produce winners. Here are the 27th Annual Carbonell Award nominees and winners (indicated in bold-face type).
