Tony Nominee Sally Mayes to Return as Rose in Staten Island's Gypsy | Playbill

News Tony Nominee Sally Mayes to Return as Rose in Staten Island's Gypsy Sally Mayes, who received Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations for her performance as Ilona in the revival of She Loves Me, will be playing the ultimate stage mother this summer in Harbor Lights Theater Company's staging of Gypsy in Staten Island.

Mayes recently played Rose in Yorktown Stage's production of Gypsy, the multi-award winning musical featuring music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, choreography by Jerome Robbins and book by Arthur Laurents.

The Harbor Lights staging will open Aug. 7 and continue through Aug. 16 at the St. George Theater. Bill Castellino (Cagney) directs, and Mary Ann Lamb and Lisa Gajda will choreograph.

The cast will also feature Emmy nominee Kathy Brier (One Life to Live, Hairspray) as Electra, as well as Broadway vets Mimi Quillin (Sweet Charity, Ragtime) and Patti Mariano (42nd Street, Full Monty) as Tessa Tura and Mazeppa, respectively. Anthony Johnson, Heidi Friese, Michael Marotta and Samantha Bruce are also among the cast.

"The Harbor Lights Theater Company is honored to be producing this all-time classic, Gypsy, at the historic St. George Theater. Gypsy is widely considered one of the greatest musicals of all time," said artistic director Tamara Jenkins in a statement.

The musical is loosely based on the 1954 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist. It tells the story of Madame Rose, the "backstage mother," and her daughter Louise, trying to emerge from Rose's shadow to become a star. Tickets are available by visiting TicketMaster or visiting the St. George Theater Box Office located at 35 Hyatt St., Staten Island.
