Benefits and Galas The Moth Will Honor André De Shields at 2024 Gala

Tony winner De Shields will be honored with The Moth's Storyteller of the Year award.

Storytelling nonprofit The Moth is set to honor Tony, Emmy, and Grammy winner André De Shields, as well as Moth supporter Anne Maffei, at their annual gala June 4. Making Waves: The 2024 Moth Ball will be held at The Lighthouse at Pier 61 at Chelsea Pears, beginning at 6:30 PM. 

De Shields will be honored with The Moth's Storyteller of the Year award, joining a group of past honorees that includes David Byrne, Regina King, Kemp Powers, Padma Lakshmi, Roxane Gay, Martin Scorsese, Zadie Smith, Roz Chast, Calvin Trillin, Salman Rushdie, Carrie Brownstein, and Anna Deavere Smith. Maffei will receive a new accolade, the Legacy Award. 

"We're delighted to pay tribute to the venerable André De Shields, whose illustrious legacy and trailblazing career of bringing stories to life through music, television, film and dance has inspired so many," The Moth Executive Director Sarah Haberman said in a statement. "Additionally, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Anne Maffei for her unwavering support, leadership and contributions to The Moth over the years. We simply wouldn't be where we are today without Anne!"

Broadway legend De Shields has amassed an extensive list of credits over the years, most recently appearing as Ben Loman in the 2022 revival of Death of a Salesman. He received a 2019 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance as Hermes in Hadestown, and earned previous nominations for his work in Play On! and The Full Monty. De Shields is set to star as Old Deuteronomy in Perelman Performing Arts Center's upcoming drag-ball inspired revival of Cats
