The Drama League has opened applications for their 2023-2024 service programs, collectively known as the Directors Project. These programs provide opportunities, career development, and professional support to early- and mid-career directors. Programs include fellowships, residencies, and assistantships at major theatrical institutions.

Available programs include the FutureNow Fellowship, which has been expanded for 2023 to address the needs of directors who work in both traditional and non-traditional spaces. An immersive professional experience in partnership with the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, New York (as well as NYC's TheaterWorksUSA), the fellowship will for the first time include traditional productions, site-specific productions, and promenade practices, with material chosen by the Hangar Theatre artistic director, which will then be developed with the fellows in Hangar’s Wedge FutureNow Festival.

"Site-specific and promenade theatre have become mainstays of many communities, bringing theatre to people in new, exciting avenues,” notes Drama League Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks. “We're thrilled to offer directors this additional opportunity to strengthen and diversify their skill sets, fostering theatrical accessibility by engaging communities in new and exciting ways. The FutureNow Program has always looked to the future, but never more than it does now."

Additional programs include the Beatrice Terry Residency, which offers a $10,000 stipend to female and Non-binary writer-directors; the Next Stage Residency, which offers a $10,000 stipend to a mid-career or established director in order to workshop a specific production; and numerous educational initiatives designed to support young directors.

Applications are now open at DramaLeague.org.
