Tony Award winner Suzan-Lori Parks and her 8-piece band, Sula & The Joyful Noise, present a Juneteenth celebration concert at New York City's Francis Kite Club June 20 at 7 PM. The evening of music and celebration commemorates the first full day of freedom after the holiday.
Parks is an acclaimed playwright whose achievements include being the first African-American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Topdog/Underdog in 2002. The work was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 2002, and the recent Broadway revival received the 2023 Tony for Best Revival of a Play.
Parks brought her Plays for the Plague Year to the Public Theater's Joe's Pub for a concert-style world premiere run in spring 2023. Her recent play Sally & Tom premiered at the Public March 28, 2024 and closed June 2.
