When two CW programs—Supergirl and The Flash—join forces for a musical crossover episode later this season, they will feature songs by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land) and Rachel Bloom, co-creator and star of the network’s hit Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, according to Deadline.com.
Grant Gustin, star of The Flash, will perform “Runnin’ Home To You” by the Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe-winning team of Pasek & Paul in the episode “Duet” airing Tuesday, March 21 at 8 PM on The CW.
Gustin and Supergirl star Melissa Benoist will sing the number “Superfriends,” written by Bloom and Tom Root in that same episode. As a musical comedy television series, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend regularly features Broadway-style musical numbers.
Andrew Kreisberg, executive producer for both Supergirl and The Flash, was quoted by Deadline saying, “Benj and Justin are the premier song-writing duo of our time. Not only are they two of the most talented people Greg and I have ever met, they are also two of the nicest. To have them be a part of our musical episode is beyond our wildest expectations. We hope everyone falls in love with the song they wrote for us as much as we did.”
Both TV shows feature several singing actors: Supergirl boasts Melissa Benoist (Glee), Jeremy Jordan (Newsies) and Laura Benanti (She Loves Me, Gypsy) , while The Flash features Grant Gustin (Glee), Jesse L. Martin (Rent) and Victor Garber (Sweeney Todd). “Some of you may know my personal love for musicals, and we have a number of people who can sing across all the shows,” executive producer Greg Berlanti stated.
“We’ve got such talented actors, 15 years from now when the last of these shows is going off the air, that would be a big regret [if we didn’t do it]—it’s too much fun not to,” added executive producer Sarah Schechter.
