Nineteen theatremakers from the U.S., Middle East, and North Africa will convene in Morocco next month for the Sundance Institute's second annual Theatre Lab. The Lab, which will take place from May 6– 27 at the Fellah Hotel outside Marrakech, is a three-week program of consultation, mentorship and workshop performance of new work for the stage.

The Sundance Lab fellows are: P73 Playwriting Fellow C.A. Johnson, Sweat director Kate Whoriskey, playwright and filmmaker Stacey Rose, director Logan Vaughn, House Rules playwright A. Rey Pamatmat, director Lisa Peterson, playwright Kamal Khalladi, director Latefa Ahrrare, playwright and performer Intissar Chaabani, director Racha Baroud, choreographer and writer Ali Chahrour, playwright and director Hani Sami, Sherif Samy, queens playwright Martyna Majok, who will develop her play Sanctuary City (set to premiere as part of New York Theatre Workshop's upcoming season), and An Octoroon playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, who is co-creating the Untitled Narcissister Project with playwright Narcissister.

Artists-in-residence at the Lab will be playwright/producer Asiimwe Deborah Kawe and Bashar Markus.

“At our Labs, we’ve seen the power of cooperative practice across cultures and borders, time and again,” said Sundance Institute Theatre Program Director Philip Himberg in a statement. “Creating a focused and well-resourced environment that nurtures talent and relationships as new work evolves is especially key in the current global climate: meaningful engagement between artist communities strengthens all participants, as well as their respective cultures of origin.”

Himberg, along with a team of creative advisors, actors and dramaturgs will collaborate with the theatremakers as they develop their projects.
