News Steven Berkoff Stars as Saddam Hussein in New Comedy Opening Tonight in London Steven Berkoff returns to the London stage to play Saddam Hussein in the world premiere of Anthony Horowitz's Dinner with Saddam, officially opening Sept. 22 at the Menier Chocolate Factory, following previews that began Sept. 10, for a run through Nov. 14.

The production, directed by Lindsay Posner, also stars Sanjeev Bhaskar and Shobu Kapoor.

The premise for the play is described thus in press materials: "So what happens when Saddam Hussein turns up on your doorstep and announces he is staying for dinner? Political and personal issues are top of the menu, but behind the kitchen door something else far more sinister is cooking…"

Horowitz is best known as the author of over 40 books including the best-selling "Alex Rider" series, the recent Sherlock Holmes novels "The House of Silk" and "Moriarty" and the forthcoming James Bond novel "Trigger Mortis." For television he created the series "Midsomer Murders" and "Foyle's War."

The production is designed by Tim Shortall, with lighting by Howard Harrison, sound design by Gregory Clarke and music by Matthew Scott. The cast also includes Nathan Amzi, Ilan Goodman and Rebecca Grant.



Berkoff is a prolific actor, director and playwright. On Broadway, he adapted and directed Kafka's Metamorphosis that starred Mikhail Baryshnikov. Other stage works include directing Salome (National Theatre), On the Waterfront (West End) and starring in his own Shakespeare's Villains (West End). On screen, his acting credits include "War and Remembrance," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Beverley Hills Cop" and "Octopussy." 
Kapoor returns to the stage after a five-year absence. She is best known for her leading role as Mrs. Khan in the BBC's "Citizen Khan" and formerly as series regular Gita on "EastEnders."

Bhaskar's work includes creating and performing in "Goodness Gracious Me" and "The Kumars at No. 42," as well as the lead in the forthcoming ITV series "Unforgotten." On stage his credits include Spamalot and Dumb Show.
