The new two-hour drama, titled "Peter & Wendy" is also set to feature pop star Paloma Faith as Tinker Bell and "Breaking Bad"'s Laura Fraser as Mrs. Darling.
According to press notes, the iconic roles of Peter and Wendy will be played by emerging talents Zac Sutcliffe and Hazel Doupe. The ITV drama will also introduce brand-new characters, played by Bjarne Henriksen ("The Killing"), Ben Crompton ("Game of Thrones") and Rasmus Hardiker ("Your Highness").
The project will reimagine the much-loved classic tale in a more modern spirit, opening in a present-day hospital setting, where 12-year-old Lucy is awaiting treatment for a serious heart condition. To comfort her, Lucy's mother reads her "Peter Pan," and the day before her operation, the young girl goes to sleep dreaming of the story. It is through Lucy's imagination that the story of Peter Pan is retold, cutting back and forth between her real-life health struggles and the fantasy of Neverland.
ITV’s Director of Drama Steve November said in a press statement, "I’m delighted to be bringing J.M. Barrie’s classic story of 'Peter Pan' to ITV. This wonderful interpretation by Adrian Hodges is faithful to Barrie’s original, but adds a new and unexpected dimension that makes it feel as though we are hearing the story for the first time."
"The drama will retain the classic structure and content of J.M Barrie’s original 'Peter Pan,' while adding a new framing story designed to allow audiences a different way into the story," added producer Stewart Mackinnon. The project, currently in production, is scripted by BAFTA winner Adrian Hodges ("My Week with Marilyn") and produced by Headline Pictures ("The Invisible Woman").
