Paul Feig, who is directing a reboot of the franchise for Sony, Tweeted Sept. 25 that Weaver had joined the cast, along with other original cast members Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray. The movies tell the story of a company that uses technology to rid customers of unwanted hauntings. The original also starred Dan Aykroyd, who is not yet involved in the sequel. The new film, which is scheduled for release July 15, 2016, will star a new cast of ghostbusters: Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Chris Hemsworth, Kate McKinnon and Neil Casey.
There has been no official word on Weaver's casting from Sony itself.
Weaver's Broadway credits also include Sex and Longing and Hurlyburly, for which she earned a 1985 Tony nomination as Best Actress in a Play. Her long film and TV career includes several other franchises, notably "Alien" and "Avatar."
