Shia LaBeouf, who was set to make his Broadway debut in 2013 in Lyle Kessler's three-hander Orphans—but very publicly exited the production due to creative differences with Alec Baldwin—is scheduled to make his professional stage debut next month in the world premiere of a new play by Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet.

Directed by Marja-Lewis Ryan, Henry Johnson will play the Electric Lodge in Venice, California, September 1-24, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

LaBeouf, who will be seen in Francis Ford Coppola's forthcoming Megalopolis, will be joined on stage by Oscar nominee David Paymer, Dominic Hoffman, and Evan Jonigkeit.

The new play “follows the plight of a man after an act of compassion upends his life.”

“I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to work with David Mamet. His talent and creativity are unparalleled, and it is truly an honor to collaborate with arguably our greatest living playwright,” LaBeouf said in a statement. “Working with these artists has deepened my appreciation for the power of storytelling. I am immensely thankful for the chance to learn from and build with them.”

Mamet added, "Constantin Stanislavski wrote that any director who does something
interesting with the text does not understand the text. Most stage directors are only English teachers with a stage manager to bring them tea while they confuse the actors. God forgive them, and may God bless Ms. Ryan.”

Director Ryan is the showrunner for The L Word: Generation Q.
