Casting has been announced for the English-language premiere of the new musical Marie Curie, which will play London’s Charing Cross Theatre June 1–July 28 with an official opening June 7.
Directed by Sarah Meadows, the cast will be led by Alisa Davidson (Heathers the Musical) as Marie Curie, Chrissie Bhima (The Witches) as Anne Kowalska, Thomas Josling (Scandaltown) as Pierre Curie, and Richard Meek (Hairspray tour) as Ruben.
The ensemble will include Christopher Killik, Dean Makowski-Clayton, Rio Maye, Yujin Park, Isabel Snaas, Maya Kristal Tenenbaum, and Lucy Young.
With a book and lyrics by Seeun Choun and music by Jongyoon Choi, the musical follows Nobel Prize-winning physicist and pioneer Marie Curie, who is faced with a moral dilemma: As she discovers the lifesaving potential of radium to cure cancer, factory workers handling the substance are succumbing to radium poisoning.
The upcoming production also features an English book adaptation by Tom Ramsay, English lyrics adaptation by Emma Fraser, and a literal translation by Ahreumbi Rew.
The creative team includes music director Emma Fraser, set and costume designer Rose Montgomery, lighting designer Prema Mehta, choreographer Joanna Goodwin, costume supervisor Evelien van Camp, sound designer Andrew Johnson, casting director Jane Deitch, and production manager James Anderton with general management by Ollie Hancock and Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment.
Marie Curie premiered in South Korea in 2020 at the Chungmu Art Center and was subsequently broadcast live. The show later returned to Hongik Art Center Grand Theater, winning the Grand Prize, Best Book, Best Music, Best Director, and Best Producer at the 5th Korea Musical Awards. In 2023-2024 Marie Curie opened its third season touring to six cities across South Korea.
