The world premiere of Oliver Cotton's The Score, starring the previously reported Brian Cox (Succession) as Johann Sebastian Bach, is scheduled to begin performances October 12 at the Theatre Royal Bath.

Directed by Trevor Nunn, performances will continue through October 28.

Cox will be joined by the newly announced Nicole Ansari-Cox (Deadwood, Succession) as Bach’s wife Anna (Ansari-Cox is Brian Cox’s real-life wife), Matthew Burns (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) as Carl, Doña Croll (The Doctor, The American Plan) as Emilia, Peter de Jersey (Warrior Nun, Doctor Who) as Voltaire, Stephen Hagan (You, The Larkins) as Frederick, Christopher Staines (Wolf Hall, Mrs. Dalloway) as Quantz, Benedict Salter as Benda, and Eric Sirakian (The Kite Runner on Broadway) as Graun.

The play is set in 1747 Prussia as Bach reluctantly visits the court of the ambitious and dangerous European leader Frederick II. The two men could hardly be more different; however, Frederick remains in awe of Bach’s genius and has prepared a musical conundrum that he hopes will baffle the composer and amuse his court.

Cox is a two-time Olivier winner for his performances in Rat in the Skull and Titus Andronicus. Film credits include Braveheart, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and The Bourne Identity.

Former artistic director of the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company, Tony and Olivier winner Nunn’s career includes the international hit musical Les Misérables and the Tony-winning The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, among many others.

The upcoming production will also have set and costume design by Robert Jones, lighting design by Johanna Town, sound design and music by composer Sophie Cotton, associate direction by Cordelia Monsey, and casting by Ginny Schiller.
