Scott Stangland (Shucked, Once) has joined the cast of the upcoming workshop tour of the new musical The Royal Pyrate. Hunter Bird (Bronco Billy) is set to direct.
Stangland will play Black Sam Bellamy, joining a company that also includes Jordan Kai Burnett (Magic Mike Live, Romy & Michele, Scissorhands) as Mary Hallet, Eddie Cooper (Parade, Dead Outlaw) as Blackbeard, and Lauren Molina (Sweeney Todd, Rock of Ages) as Paulsgrave Williams.
The tour will begin at the Almanack Arts Colony on Nantucket Island August 20–21, before continuing on to New York City, where it will play the Waterfront Barge Museum in Red Hook, Brooklyn, August 24–25.
The Royal Pyrate is a new musical that reimagines the 300-year-old love story of the pirate Black Sam Bellamy and Mary Hallet, a woman so ahead of her time she is accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts. Based on the real history of the Golden Age of Piracy, the 100-minute musical features an original score and lyrics by Jason Landon Marcus and a book by Chas LiBretto.
Directed by Hunter Bird, the show blends sea shanty, roots rock, and pirate music for a score that will be performed by Jim Bertini, Charley Layton, Jason Landon Marcus, and Charlie Bennet.
The production will also feature costume design by Juli and Alex Abene and sound design by Mike Samse. Nate Netzley serves as production stage manager.
