Sara Bareilles Sings Waitress’ ‘She Used to Be Mine’ for a Dancing Theresa May on Saturday Night Live | Playbill

Film & TV News Sara Bareilles Sings Waitress’ ‘She Used to Be Mine’ for a Dancing Theresa May on Saturday Night Live The Tony and Grammy nominee performed the tune as Kate McKinnon’s take on the prime minister experienced Brexit blues.

Waitress only recently celebrated its official U.K. premiere with a West End bow, but already the Sara Bareilles musical has had an impact on the prime minister. Sort of.

On April 6’s Saturday Night Live, the singer-songwriter offered up a performance of the show’s signature ballad “She Used to Be Mine” as Theresa May (played by Kate McKinnon) felt the woes of a disapproving nation amidst Brexit deal shortcomings. The gloomy day veers into surreal performance art as McKinnon dons a Union Jack unitard to perform an interpretive dance while Bareilles sat at the piano. She also makes out with Kit Harington as Winston Churchill.

Check out the sketch above.

Bareilles, who has taken on the central role of Jenna herself in Broadway’s Waitress during three limited engagements, was the musical guest for the Harington-hosted episode, also performed “Saint Honesty” and “Fire” (both from her latest album Amidst the Chaos(.

Waitress—not featuring Theresa May—continues to play Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre and London’s Adelphi Theatre, in addition to a North American tour.
